Rationale for endorsing candidates on Oshawa's Impossible Ballot

HERE IS YOUR "IMPOSSIBLE" ELECTION BALLOT

PLEASE PRINT OFF A COPY OF THIS BALLOT AND TAKE IT WITH YOU TO THE VOTING BOOTH TO HELP YOU MAKE YOUR BALLOT CHOICES

PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM NOT RECOMMENDING A RETURN OF INCUMBENTS SINCE THEY'VE MESSED UP ON SO MANY FRONTS

• They've given us the highest tax rate in the GTA and one of the highest in the country

• They've wasted precious tax dollars and run up city debt with unneeded projects like the demolition and rebuilding of council chambers and "A" wing of ciy and the $3M annual losses for the GM Centre which have to come from your tax dollars

• They've run up city debt from $10M to over $100M in a few short years.

• They've undemocratically asked you a question about the kind of election you wanted and refused to inform you about the question, its meaning, what difference it would make, and failed to inform you that the "trick" question they asked would give you this impossible ballot with over 50 names simply to guarantee themselves election based on name recognition and not service to this city,

• Mayor John Gray funded MBA's for his political friends and his birthday party with your tax money and the silent approval of all city council members,
• John Henry moved the motion to provide retired/defeated city politicians life-time health benefits and also, despite the fact that he claims not to have charged the city one cent in expenses, he has taken the $100 per week auto allowance which he uses to fuel his company van.  He had himself removed from this benefit at the same time as he filed his nomination papers for mayor....I think this is dishonest!
• Too many examples of silly wasteful purchases like the Cullen Gardens Miniatures promoted by Louise Parkes who wanted to spend an additional $2 million of your tax money to develop a site,

• The poor planning for student housing around the university to create untenable living conditions for the homeowner's there and the police/bylaw officers/locksmith raids on student housing searching for leasing documents when I didn't know this was a police state with these infringements on Constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties.

• Politicians voting themselves entitlements like lifetime health benefits, handsome retirement, travel and automobile expense allowances, and escalating political salaries/benefits/expenses so that Mayoral Candidate Louise Parkes took a 54% salary/benefits inrease in the first three years of her current four year term. How many of you received annual 18% compensation increases particularly at this time of a weak economy and high Oshawa unemployment.

For all these reasons and many more...I feel we have to replace every member of council.

I HAVE SURVEYED ALL CANDIDATES AS TO POSITION ON SELECTED IMPORTANT ISSUES LIKE TAX CUTS AND PUT THESE RESULTS IN WITH MY PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF CANDIDATES TO SUGGEST AN EFFECTIVE COUNCIL TO PRODUCE GOOD GOVERNMENT FOR OSHAWA

THE CANDIDATES I'VE ENDORSED ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW.   OF COURSE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO VOTE FOR A COMPLETE SLATE.  IF AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU CAN VOTE FOR UP TO 3 CANDIDATES, YOU COULD CHOOSE TO VOTE FOR 1, 2, OR 3.

MAYOR---Choose one

Recommended candidate highlighted in yellow

Cathy Clarke---NO---Chaired Committee to devise undemocratic plebiscite strategy of non-information and failed to see that public was informed even though I had sent her a request to do so

John Gray---NO---Supported General Vote, funded MBA's, his $46,000 birthday party, wanted 9% tax hikes weeks after last election, led council to increase city debt from $10M to $100M in 8 years, said city council had no responsibility to inform public about ward/general vote plebiscite question---said this was responsibility of public to fundraise and organize to inform public...what mayor said was public responsibility was against Ontario Municipal Election Law which doesn't allow informal 3rd party campaigns but does give cities unfettered and unlimited funding ability to insure public is fully informed.  This is not a mayor who believes in transparency of government.

John Henry---NO---Supported General Vote---Supported 13% tax hike this term, asleep while MBA's / Mayor's $46,000  birthday party were going through, Proposed motion to provide lifetime health benefits for retiring/defeated politicians which Durham Regional Senior Officials say will be an additional expense for taxpayers, Claims to have taken no expense monies but in fact has taken $100 per week auto expense which fuels his company truck at taxpayer expense.

Dale Jodoin---NO---planted to split my anti-council vote

BILL LONGWORTH---YES---brought ward elections to Oshawa in 1985 and has been fighting to retain them with presentations to council and his blog www.oshawaspeaks.ca for the last four years... Only Mayoral Candidate calling for tax cuts---3% Residential tax cuts annually until tax rates in line with our neighbours and make industrial/commercial rates competitive to Whitby, Ajax, Pickering to insure we don't lose UOIT spinoff industry to our neighbours....Currently writes a weekly newspaper column and hosts a weekly 3 hour radio show, both called "Eye on City Hall"  ....Has exciting vision for Oshawa's future and particularly his "Good Government" Plan to involve citizens in major questions such as expensive city hall demolition and rebuilding, the GM Centre, and political salary and benefits improvements.

Louise V. Parkes---NO---Supported General Vote, took 54% salary/benefits increase in first three years of her current term, maxed out expense accounts, highest blackberry bils on Council $23 less than the total of 8 of her council compatriats, dined with $100 meals and $85 photos at your expense, wanted increased office expense budgets to cover her travel costs, voted for every tax increase, brought us the Cullen Miniatures and wanted to spend an additional $2M to house them, has failed at everything she touched at city hall (Regent Theatre, Downtown Hotel, Cullen Miniatures).  Questionabloe purchase of $250 worth of downtown parking tokens despite the fact that she has free parking at city hall.  After 12 years on council her solution for attracting commercial/development development is to set up a "Mayor's Council" rather than an obvious reduction in Oshawa's highest industrial/commercial tax rate in the GTA...She obviously doesnot understand obvious and elementary solutions to problems but is content to throw around terms that sound good to the public.  Her mayoral campaign is very dishonest in calling for "Fair Taxes" in light of her obscene personal spending levels of taxpayer money.

Eve. E. Simpson---NO...planted to split my anti-council vote
